Tongue firmly in cheek...
From an article in the Telegraph:
However, this illusion of anonymity was to end drastically. Foster’s Freshman Year was marked by the shooting of President Ronald Reagan by John Hinckley, Jr - a fan of Foster’s who had become obsessed with Taxi Driver, and wanted to assassinate the President to impress her. The actress said it was an “enormously impactful event on [her] life.”
Did the Brady campaign try to scapegoat the actress....unlikely! And yet Hinkley would have been unlikely to have shot Reagan (and Brady) but for his obsession with Foster....
Another Telegraph article is typical:
Though the writer, an American, while trying to outline why we're allowed to have guns still gets it wrong;
"It can be hard to appreciate America's relationship with guns across the Atlantic, but the individual right to own guns is written into our Constitution and embedded in our culture, originally borne of the pioneer experience and reinforced by film and television."
The individual right to own guns is not technically written into the Constitution, but results from the natural rights of man to Life, Liberty etc. The right to Life necessarily means a right to defend that life and the means so to do. The 2nd amendment protects that right from government infringement.
One of the comments is quite good:
British readers should know that there is no "debate" going on. Neither Democrats nor Republicans in Congress will pass gun control legislation this generation. It isn't the NRA that prevents them from doing so, but rather the polls: support for gun control continues at a historic low. British readers may well be confused by this state of affairs, even though the politics of it are rather simple. They would be better served by a more inquisitive press in Britain. Few elements of the case for loosening restrictions on firearms ever make it into this newspaper. You may agree or disagree with this case, but as presented here you probably won't know what it is.
a definitive smackdown on the UK press, but it could equally apply to the MSM here too.
